Declines in U.S. construction and spending meant less trash in 2009, but raising prices while cutting costs enabled Waste Management to produce nearly $1 billion in profits. Serving 20 million customers, the giant waste collector is also North America's largest residential recycler, managing more than 7 million tons of recyclables last year, like those seen at this plant in Phoenix.
