San Antonio might be the perfect spot for the risk-averse second-home buyer. While the median housing price in other markets we feature experienced double-digit percentage drops from their highs, the median San Antonio home price has dipped just 5% from its peak and is near its bottom, says Moody's Analytics. "We stayed pretty healthy," says Keller Williams realtor Deborah Myers.
With no state income tax, the city could be particularly attractive to a couple on a fixed income. Although San Antonio is the country's seventh-largest city, residents say it has a laid-back, small-town feel with its patchwork of neighborhoods. San Antonio benefits from a central location: Hill Country is only about a half-hour drive north, the Gulf of Mexico is a day trip, and other Texas hubs are all within driving distance. Several military facilities fall within the city limits, and a number of veterans retire in the area. The Texas climate is a draw -- temperatures rarely fall below freezing -- but be prepared to perspire in the summer: 100-degree days aren't unusual.
