One Ford

The Escape's new look makes it clear this is a car-based crossover SUV. The current Escape is, too, but its boxy design was meant to attract customers who wanted something with a more rugged look, something fewer shoppers are looking for today.

The new Escape shares its appearance with the Ford Kuga, a crossover Ford sells in Europe. So, this new design is also part of Ford's plan to move away from selling entirely different cars in different countries. Ford's new Focus and Fiesta small cars already share their designs with European counterparts. An upcoming new version of the Fusion mid-sized sedan will, also.

The bottom line, Ford says, is that it wants, as much as possible, to sell one set of products around the world.

The new Escape goes on sale next year.
