What's a worst-stocks list without an airline? AMR, the parent company of American Airlines and American Eagle, holds the distinction of being one of only three major carriers never to have faced bankruptcy.
That didn't make the past decade any easier. The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks scared Americans off flying; rising oil prices sent costs skyrocketing; and the latest recession heavily curtailed travel.
At the same time, stronger competitors like Southwest and the merged Delta/Northwest have kept fare increases in check, driving American Airlines to post losses for much of the past ten years.
