Since the real estate meltdown, government-backed housing lender Fannie Mae's market share has increased to 44%, as fewer mortgages have been issued by private lenders. To handle that rise as well as fallout from the continuing foreclosure crisis, Fannie Mae has been on a hiring spree. Last year, Fannie added more than 1,300 employees (some of whom replaced workers that were laid off during the downturn).
