CEO Bill Weldon pronounced 2009 as "one of the most challenging" years in company history. The maker of Band-Aids, prescription drugs and knee implants reported its first sales decline in 76 years.

The expiration of patents on two drugs -- epilepsy drug Topamax and antipsychotic drug Risperdal -- worth nearly $3 billion in sales, inflicted serious pain. Then came safety concerns over anemia drugs Procrit and Eprex, and 7,500 job cuts.

Despite these setbacks, the prognosis is good: J&J's pharma pipeline is healthy and its highly profitable device and diagnostics unit grew last year.--Jessica Shambora
