Since 2003, when Conoco merged with Phillips Petroleum, the company has seen fantastic profit growth, even for an oil giant: 72% in 2004 and 66% in 2005, due mostly to skyrocketing natural-gas prices. Last year, however, profits grew just 15% as an increase in U.S. natural-gas supply in the fourth quarter pushed prices down.
