Fastest-growing rank: 80
Fortune 1000 rank: 260

With the price of gold up 32% this year, perhaps it's no surprise to find the largest U.S. producer of the metal on this list. Newmont, headquartered in Colorado, mines gold and copper in nearly every corner of the world. The company is all too familiar with the boom and bust cycles of commodities: It celebrated its 90th birthday earlier this year.

For now, it's enjoying the current boom. Newmont has new projects in Ghana, North America, South America and the Asia Pacific region. But as the cost to produce gold rises -- the company says it's up to $588 per ounce from $507 last year -- its bottom line is taking a hit. Profits rose by 18% in the second quarter, but missed analyst expectations by a wide margin. Revenue rose 11%.
