NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Retail gas prices have risen to yet another record, with half the states in the nation paying more than $4 a gallon on average, auto group AAA's Web site showed Wednesday.

The national average for regular unleaded gas rose nine-tenths of a cent to a fourth straight record of $4.052, according to AAA.

Gas prices have risen nearly 9% from $3.718 last month and are 32% higher than the $3.066 average price a year ago.

The average price is $4 a gallon or more in 25 states and the District of Columbia, according to the survey.

Gas is most expensive in California, where a gallon averages $4.496. That's followed by Connecticut at $4.358 and Alaska at $4.307. Missouri has the lowest average gas price at $3.849.

The price of diesel fuel, used by truckers to haul goods across the country, rose seven-tenths of a cent to an all-time high of $4.792 a gallon.

The AAA survey is based on credit card swipes at 85,000 gasoline stations across the nation and is conducted by Oil Price Information Service.  To top of page
