Publix was founded in 1930 by George W. Jenkins, whose descendants continue to lead the company. His nephew is CEO, his son is chairman of the board and his grandson is president. Publix operates 882 supermarkets in five southeastern states: Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee. Sales exceed $20 billion a year.

Publix compensation includes employee ownership. Every year the company makes a profit sharing contribution to employee accounts in the form of company stock. Publix stock has been increasing in value at the rate of 27 percent a year and the Employee Stock Ownership Plan owns 31 percent of all the shares.
