The U.K. consumer bank ranks highly thanks partly to its ambitious program to make managers accountable for nonfinancial goals. In addition to publishing a list of 48 social and environmental performance metrics, it also ties 25% of senior managers' bonuses to meeting its goals on those measures. For example, its Social Banking program aims to halve the number of adults in targeted areas in the U.K. who do not have a bank account by offering simple accounts that allow deposits and withdrawals but don't offer any credit. It also tracks the number of customers who then graduate to standard bank accounts.
