Traveling through Bali, Indonesia, around the time of the 2002 terrorist bombings, friends Diana DeLuca and Jeneen Gacek, both 32, decided to help Bali jeweler Hariyono, 30, keep sales going by introducing his goods to the Canadian market. Since 2003, BauXo, based in Edmonton, has sold handmade jewelry - crafted from bone, recycled shoe leather and wood - to independent retailers worldwide and museum shops, including the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. One of Hariyono's most recent designs, the Valentine's Day-inspired Compel ring, is made from the wood of an Indonesian Sono tree.
