Will Smith's "Hancock" wins the award for most flawed superhero of the year. When you have the super strength to fling a whale, make sure you don't hit a sailboat. That's all I'm saying.
"Hancock" is the story of a jaded and ornery superhero whose ability to fly is severely impaired by his fondness for drinking. He hires a public relations specialist to help improve his image but winds up in a tryst with the spin-doctor's wife.
The film blends comedy with superhero action, which is risky, according to Gray. Especially since Hancock is not based on an existing character like Batman and the Hulk.
But given the power of the "Will Smith brand" he thinks it stands a chance of doing more than $200 million overall.
Indeed, Smith is the "most bankable star in Hollywood," said Pandya. "When you hear the name Will Smith, you don't worry at all."
What's more, the film opens at the height of the summer movie season on July 4. "That's about as much of a guarantee for blockbuster status that you're going to get," Pandya said.
