This maker of telecommunications software and IT security products was founded in 1993 in Dallas, TX by a group of Chinese nationals who moved operations to Beijing in 1995. The firm arrived just in time to take advantage of an enormous tech build out in China.
AsiaInfo designed and implemented most of the mainland's major commercial telecom projects, creating the backbone of its quickly expanding cell phone network. Its software allows customers to build, maintain, operate, and create more effieicent networks; and its end users are China's biggest telcos including China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom.
As the number of computer users increased on the mainland, the company saw a growing need for security products. In 2004 AsiaInfo acquired Lenovo's non-telecom related IT services business so it could offer products like virtual private networks (VPN) and firewalls in China.
