Hover on it
If you hover on a setting, a small bubble with text expands. The goal here is to allow users to understand what settings mean without their having to navigate away from the interface. When I have to change settings in Facebook's current environment, I'll have to leave the interface and refer back to my own profile. Then I'll get distracted by something else, and all of a sudden, I'll forget what I was trying to do in the first place.
So with these text bubbles, I'm trying to keep people focused on the task at hand, as well as providing more information about what's actually in play here. You'll also notice that in the graphic, I included examples of movies the user likes or activities they do, just so they have a bit of context about what these settings are actually for.
