The Privacy Assistant

Facebook is built around the premise that if you aggregate all of these settings together, and if you aggregate the information of many people altogether, you can enable all kinds of engaging, interesting experiences. The problem that they're experiencing now is that people are upset because they feel like they're being duped into sharing information.

The Privacy Assistant is a tool that provides a step-by-step narrative. It would tell the user their position and also ask the user what they would like, almost like a survey. You go through and it asks you, "Do you want to be able to get customized recommendations when visiting sites like Yelp?" The user might answer "Yes" or "No." If the answer is "Yes," the user would be told which preferences will be made public and what the implications would be. By doing that, users would be better able to understand the costs and benefits of opening their personal information to other people or to businesses. It's really a place for them to learn what they want to do.
