Hollywood hopes big stars equal big blockbusters

After a record-breaking summer, the major movie studios are banking on the Toms (Hanks and Cruise), Julia, Nicole and Angelina to keep churning out box-office hits this fall.

A gritty crime drama with a great cast and a highly respected director. That formula worked for "The Departed" last year, which in addition to finally getting Martin Scorsese an Oscar, also generated more than $130 million at the box office.

This fall, movie analysts say that "American Gangster" could duplicate the box office success of "The Departed." The film, starring Oscar winners Denzel Washington as a crime lord turned informant and Russell Crowe as a detective, is directed by Ridley Scott of "Alien," "Blade Runner" and "Gladiator" fame.

The mercurial Crowe has continued to be a solid box office draw during the past few years and Washington is quite possibly the most respected leading man in Hollywood.

So just as Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson helped lead "The Departed" to box office glory last year, expect Washington and Crowe to do likewise with "Amercian Gangster."

"Based on the premise, the closest movie to 'The Departed' this fall is 'American Gangster.' It has a great cast and is in the same genre," said Box Office Mojo's Gray.

One potential concern for the movie though is that it will face tough competition in its opening weekend from the two high-profile movies featured in the next two panels.
