Week one: Talk about what you want
Time it takes: 45 minutes

Remember the last time you had a leisurely chat with your spouse about financial goals? Er, no? Well, it's worth the time, and if you're smart about it you can do it in less than an hour.

The fast way: Both of you take a handful of index cards and write a goal on each, says Mary Claire Allvine, author of "The Family CFO."

Come together and see where you overlap. Then order them by importance and pick the top three. In week six, you'll focus on these. If you finish early, there's a bunch of other stuff you and your partner could talk about.
