At Bakesale Betty's on Telegraph Avenue, line up for the best fried chicken sandwich of your life, and chat with happy locals at the ironing tables and chairs set up outside. You'll recognize owner Alison Barakat by her bright blue wig. Barakat, 35, founded the store after graduating from a program offered by Women's Initiative, a local nonprofit that provides funding and education for low-income women. Now her fluffy scones, a favorite of California first lady Maria Shriver, are served regularly at the governor's mansion in Sacramento.
