Valero Energy
Rank: 26 (Previous rank: 10)
CEO: William R. Klesse
Compare tool: Valero Energy vs. Top 10
Valero's operating margins got hammered in the past year due to weak consumer demand for oil and gas, high inventory, and price discounting -- trends Valero chief Bill Klesse expects to continue well into 2010. No wonder Valero stock is off 75% from its 2007 high.

One bright spot: ethanol. In the past year, Valero purchased a number of ethanol plants just before ethanol margins turned for the better. The Texas-based company now operates ten ethanol plants with a combined production capacity of 1.1 billion gallons per year, making it one of the biggest ethanol producers in the country. --P.N.
