New ideas from dead CEOs

Lasting lessons from business leaders who've gone to the great corner office in the sky.

A.P. Giannini: Bank of America
Obstacle:
A.P. Giannini watches his father shot to death by a disgruntled farm worker, and then after moving to San Francisco, witnesses his new bank destroyed by the 1906 earthquake.

Innovation:
Giannini's Bank of Italy lends to working class people and to women, as he bashes bank traditions and brings branch banking to the United States under the name Bank of America.

Lesson for today:
Become an expert in your customer's business, and break old traditions of oligopolies if they prevent you from servicing your customers better. Giannini also insisted his bankers speak multiple languages - a prescient lesson in today's multicultural world.
