Echoes of a previous exodus
Tall bronze sculptures by Rowan Gillespie serve as a memorial for the Great Irish potato famine, which resulted in the exodus of 1 million Irish, many of whom immigrated to the U.S. During Ireland's recent economic boom, it welcomed talent from all over Europe, but the current recession has spawned another exodus. This year, 30,000 more workers are expected to leave than arrive, reversing 14 years of strong immigration and raising the fear that its best workers might be lured elsewhere.
