The largest wireless telephone operator in Japan, NTT Docomo is a leader in smartphone technology.
Docomo (DCM) was the first company in the world to offer 3G services and wireless Internet access through its i-mode service in 1999.
The company is now rolling out LTE services, a 'next-generation' wireless network, making it the first 4G provider in Japan.
With over 58 million customers, Docomo has over 50% of the wireless market in Japan, said Allan Nichols, an international investing specialist with Morningstar.
Thanks to aggressive cost management, the company has a strong balance sheet and a large cash position, "which is unheard of for a phone company," said Nichols. Docomo also has a respectable dividend yield of 3.5%, he added.
