Fortis is the No.2 retail bank in the Benelux region (that's Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg) behind ING. Only 21% of its revenues are generated outside that area, but it has been buying banks in emerging markets like Turkey. One of its biggest interests outside of Europe is in energy and commodities trading in the U.S., which represents about $4 billion in revenue. This year it has joined a Royal Bank of Scotland-led group trying to buy Dutch bank ABN AMRO.
