The biggest Asian company on the Global 500, which moved up two places on the list, is also its most profitable. It raked in $14 billion in profits last year, up 16% from 2005. Thanks to a highly efficient production process and a sales pitch that requires far fewer discounts than other carmakers, Toyota earned an average of $1,200 on each car sold in 2006. Meanwhile, Detroit's Big Three lost at least $1,000 per car. Toyota surpassed Ford to become No. 2 in global vehicle sales back in 2003. But thanks to 6.9% growth in 2006, Toyota surpassed GM to become number one in the first quarter in 2007.
