The historic Eastern Massachusetts town of 18,000 was long a Native American settlement before the English began arriving in the late 1600s. Westborough is run by a system that's pretty unique to small New England towns - the open town meeting - in which residents are invited to comment and vote on all proposed policies. It has three elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. The town has six nationally registered Historic Places, in addition to many lakes and a public beach that's open to town residents during the summer. It is 45 minutes from Boston and an hour from Providence, R.I. -R.K.
