North Haven is less than 10 miles north of New Haven and the cultural attractions that come with a bigger city and Ivy League university, but this colonial town boasts more than location. It has a strong business base and was recently named a division headquarters for surgical device-maker Covidien. Residents need not leave the town's confines for entertainment. There's a summer concert series on the town green, and a developer plans to build a 157-acre village of shops, housing, and entertainment. Quinnipiac University also plans to open a 100-acre graduate education center in town. -J.L.
