Now: Chief operating officer, Kiva
Khan's first job before Google was at a nonprofit, and it was an area she wanted to return to once she had enough business experience. So in 2006, after six years on Google's sales and support team, she became COO of Kiva.org, a microfinance startup that offers tiny loans in developing countries to entrepreneurs who want to start anything from a blacksmith shop to a used-clothing store. "Microfinance was really appealing to me because 70 percent of our borrowers were women," she says. "I've had a chance to be a successful businesswoman, and helping other women learn how to develop business practices through loans is extremely rewarding."
