Both are equipped with Chrysler's 5.7-liter Hemi engine that, on its own, producers a maximum of 335 horsepower. With the assistance of hybrid electric motors, the Aspen and Durango hybrids are capable of 385 horsepower.
At the same time, the Hybrid version of these SUV's are expected to get about 25 percent better fuel economy than the non-hybrid versions.
That might not sound great but, according to EPA estimates, the Aspen Hybrid could save owners about $650 a year in fuel costs compared to a similar non-hybrid SUV.
The "two-mode" hybrid system used in these SUV's was developed by the former DaimlerChrysler corporation - now Daimler and Chrysler - in cooperation with General Motors and BMW. GM uses their version of the system in the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon Hybrid SUVs.
