Wachovia, with $720 billion in assets, has seen its stock price drop, in part because of credit market woes. Nevertheless, Sutton's stock within Wachovia is rising. She began her 29-year career as a clerk and now oversees a division at the Charlotte-based bank that accounts for nearly a third of its $30 billion in revenues. She is among the serious contenders to head the General Bank, which oversees the retail and wholesale businesses.
