Title: President and CEO
Company: BJ's Wholesale Club
Company rank: 269
Age: 52
Compensation: $2.6 million
Though Laura Sen has only been CEO of BJ's since February, she's actually been running the company since January 2008, when she became president and chief operating officer. Sen famously left BJs in 2003 after a management shakeup, but since her return, it's been all about growth.
Already benefiting from consumers' increasing bargain-consciousness -- BJ's sales in 2008 rose 11.5% to $9.8 billion -- Sen plans to continue the trend by wooing more shoppers away from traditional grocery stores with the wholesaler's fresh produce and food offerings. The strategy is paying off: Food sales at the company's 180 stores for its fourth quarter ended Jan. 31 climbed 11%.
