Angela Braly has gotten used to being the center of attention. Just weeks after taking the top spot at the health insurer in 2007, Michael Moore's Sicko took the $61.5 billion company to task.
Despite closing 2008 with more than 35 million members, a dismal year of massive corporate layoffs and investment losses cost WellPoint 288,000 members in the fourth quarter and led to a 24% drop in 2008 profits to $2.5 billion, as well as the announcement of 1,500 job cuts.
Most recently, WellPoint agreed to sell its pharmacy benefits management business for $4.68 billion to Express Scripts, which will gain 25 million WellPoint members.
But with health care reform at the top of the current administration's agenda, Braly has made it her business to speak up in favor of cooperation between health insurers and the federal government, noting that government programs could be a significant growth area for WellPoint.
