This is the beginning of a challenging, but entertaining three-hole finish. The tee shot plays 90 feet down a hill, to an amphitheater approach that collects everything short and left.
Local knowledge will tell you that you can take one less club for every 30 feet of elevation change, plus one less club because of the slope short left of the green. So, when factoring in altitude and four less clubs, I normally hit a 4 or 5 iron depending on the wind.
Initially we located the green approximately 100 feet to the west along a steep drop, but we found a significant elk migration corridor that came up to the proposed greensite. Dealing with elk on a golf course is a difficult task for the maintenance crew, and there was no sense in intruding on their migration pattern.
