This is one of two driveable par-4s. The other is No. 15, which plays in the opposite direction and really balances the course in different wind conditions. A short par-4 is designed to provide many options to reach the green -- all with varying degrees of risk.
I think the real trick is making the risk manageable enough so most players will consider trying to drive the green. If the risk far outweighs the reward, no one will try, and that takes all the fun out of a hole like this.
We generally consider these to be `half par holes,' meaning they fall between a par-3 and a full, two-shot par-4. Short par 3s and short par 5s also fall into this category, and they are often the most enjoyable holes to play. We incorporated all of them into the design here.
