11. GMAC
Global 500 rank: 244
2007 loss ($ millions): $2,332
Ticker: GMA

The GM spinoff reported a loss of $2.3 billion in 2007, reversing a $2.1 billion gain in 2006. The company blamed its woes on a $4.3 billion loss at its mortgage subsidiary, Residential Capital, which ate up profits at the global automotive and insurance businesses.

But GMAC is shoring itself up by streamlining costs and preserving its ability to meet its debt obligations.

NEXT: Fannie Mae
