20 money losers
Even giants like General Motors and Merrill Lynch had a rough time in 2007. Here are 20 companies that finished the year in the red.
Global 500 rank: 9
2007 loss ($ millions): $38,732*
Ticker: GM
The auto giant entered the history books last year when it reported the biggest loss ever in the car industry - $38.7 billion for the year.
Higher gas prices and declining truck and SUV sales have hit U.S. automakers especially hard, though GM has balanced that with strong sales growth outside its home market. Although it has yet to officially lose the title of the world's largest automaker, GM now shares that distinction with Japanese rival Toyota, which essentially matched it in 2007 sales.
